Mick Martin is a writer, director and dramaturg.

Mick was born into an Irish Catholic working class background in Bradford, where he lives to this day. After completing a degree in Dramatic Arts at Bretton Hall College, he set up a theatre company with a fellow ex Bretton mate to produce at least one piece of work before giving up and getting a proper job.

One thing led to another and after a second production he began to get commissions to write for a number of local companies, such as Major Road and Mind The Gap, Pilot Theatre, Proper Job and Red Ladder. For these companies he wrote a string of touring, community and site specific productions.

From here he was commissioned by West Yorkshire Playhouse and Hull Truck and from there to BBC Radio 4. This led to a foray into television writing.

In 1997 he was awarded the annual Televisions Arts scripting several episodes of Dream Team (Sky TV) and Ballykissangel (BBC) and Crossroads (ITV ) as well as a string of commissions for pilot episodes for potential series that sadly never made it through development ( hell) stage.

His lifelong love of northern soul music inspired him to develop a pitch for a film script about the legendary Wigan Casino, but after a frustrating year or more trying to get a commission he decided to make it a stage play instead. Once Upon A Time In Wigan premiered at Contact Theatre and West Yorks Playhouse in 2003 before embarking on a series of sellout tours. It has since been produced professionally and on the amateur and youth theatres many times.

In 2007 he established Bent Architect, a theatre company, with the producer/director Jude Wright, with a view to create and tour new work, but at all times for each to maintain their own solo careers. Bent Architect have since created touring and site specific works locally, nationally and internationally, won awards without ever having an office or a full time employee.

In 2017, after meeting and collaborating with the oral historian Trizia Wells they together launched heritage arts company History In Action.

In 2025 he and Alex O’Toole launched Northern Soul Productions with the premiere performance of Keep On Keepin On, which is unquestionably his motto!

He is currently developing a brand new play ‘Alone At 6’, drawn from his friend, actor Steve Hillman’s first hand testimony and lived experience of growing up in the care system from the late 60’s and through the 1970’s. The play explores the lifelong impact of growing up in care and is available to tour in 2027.
